Island

Am I just your current obsession?
What happens when it wears off?
When my novelty fades?
When you see the truth of me?
Where will we be when the light
shines on the dark places
and all is revealed?
Will I be discarded like the rubbish I am?
Or will you pick me up, dust me off and breathe new life into my brokenness?
Would I be worth it?
….Are you?
At what point will my tears
become a burden?
Or my lips and hands and body
no longer satisfy?
Will those fiery looks of passion become
glances of regret?
And then what?
Will I be left holding my feeble heart
in trembling hands?

I want to walk back in time,
start again.
Build a thicker wall about my heart
so that when the day comes,
and it surely will,
I’ll be prepared.
Less scarred, less hurt,
an island unto myself.

  1. Your final words remind me of “I Am A Rock” by Paul Simon. We need to build walls to protect ourselves though we should not have to.

  2. Hmmm, I know these feelings all too well. Except I don’t live on an island, just a large castle surrounded by a deep moat and high fences beyond that. This was very relatable in many ways.

  3. ….. Are you?
That is the most meaningful question in itself.
A person unwilling to accept your flaws, no matter how big they may be, is definitely not.
And I’m pretty sure the right person for you is just round the corner waiting for you with a smile on his lips.
