Today’s Earthquake Update

Hi friends,

I’ve had a few people email me so I’ll just update here. Alaska had a 7.0 earthquake today. It was fairly close to where I live. Being a night owl, I was asleep but was woken up to the violent shaking. It’s one of the biggest ones I’ve felt. I have not inspected the house for new cracks yet. (Last year that one cracked a window and a wall.) There was initially a tsunami warning (which would not directly affect me) but it was removed (they usually are). Some stores have had to shut down due to damage (product falling off shelves). This is all typical for us. But… the epicenter was right at Anchorage, which is where the majority of people live in this state. I’ve contacted a few people and I’m hearing of very messed up houses and loss of power.

So: I’m doing fine. But there’s quite a mess up here. Ahhhh the Alaska life. And to those of you who reached out to me, thank you. So much. You have no idea what it means to be thought of.

    • Very common. Not that big, but yes, earthquakes are very common. It comes from being on the “ring of fire” so-called. Where plates meet. That’s why there are so many volcanoes here too.

  1. As a person who has no idea what’s going on outside of his own personal microcosm, I had no idea this happened until right now… Glad you’re okay though! 😀

    • Thank you so much John. We Alaskans are tough 😉 I think CNN makes it into a bigger deal than it really is. Sensationalism sells…
That’s not to diminish the damage done, but I guess we are used to big things like this here.

    • Thank you so much River. I sure appreciate your concern. We are fine down here. It’s Anchorage and Wasilla that got hit hard (obviously). Just a biiig shaker! You can still email me! lol

  2. I hope people around you are ok too and that the emergency services are coping. Best wishes

        • I think for the most part Alaskans are very community minded (minus the transplants who seem to bring their ideals with them). We look out for each other and tend to put our money where our mouth is, so to speak.

        • I passed through Anchorage when I was 4. I still remember the taxidermed bear in the airport. Another blogger actually took a photo of it for me this year. It brought something to me of my childhood I would never have known again were it not for the internet

        • Yes! I agree. I’m not sure why we have taxidermied animals in every airport lol but we do! But they have them in Anchorage, Juneau, Homer, and Kenai that I know of. It’s been 23 years since I’ve been to the Fairbanks airport but I’m positive they do there as well LOL. We are good at community… but also a little weird too.

  4. Gosh! I hadn’t heard about this. I’m living in a kind of ‘working on my book’ bubble and so haven’t been keeping up with the news much. Glad you’re okay though! xx

    • Oh yeah, we get earthquakes all the time. I guess I thought that was common knowledge lol. The only damage I’ve found so far is my window which cracked in last years big earthquake has cracked even more.

    • All I found was my window that cracked in last year’s biggest earthquake cracked even further. So, that’s not bad. Some places were just destroyed! I’m blessed for sure. Thanks for the note 😊
