Rainy Day Photos

I realize it’s been a while since I’ve shared some photos from my small part of the world. It was a beautiful rainy day. Peaceful. Quite lovely. I spent a few hours at the beach (mostly) in my truck.

With the downpour, I was surprised a few shots actually turned out, though maybe a bit blurry and the lighting was odd… I quite liked the results.

Rain droplets on beach grass

Loon flapping wings on water
There were four gorgeous loons out on the water
Loon on grey ocean
I love those spots on their backs
Three bald eagles
One mature and two young bald eagles
Immature bald eagles
Mature bald eagle in alders
Taken across the harbor and up on the bluff, through the rain, I was quite pleased with how well this actually turned out
Bald eagle in alders
This one I didn’t realize was an eagle until I looked through the lens… I thought it was a plastic bag in the tree through the rain and distance. What a treat.
Bald eagle on light pole
Another immature bald eagle, hoping for fishy snacks from the fishermen
Crow cawing
I always tell the crows they can come live on my property. So far, none have taken me up on the offer for all-they-can-eat bird food and sweet-talking.

  1. I especially love the picture of the crow. Could be a Japanese painting. I also want to make friends with the crowses,. I’m going to buy some peanuts and scatter them behind me when they’re watching. I’ve read that they really have a thing for peanuts, and all you have to do is to get them to associate you with treats—and their—totally—unconditional love for you will blossom.

    • Yes, so I buy a mix of nuts and seeds that I share with the crows when I go to the beach. They eat all the peanuts first, then they go for the other stuff later. I have pictures of their beaks all lined up with a bunch of peanuts out of shell. Super cute.

I want them because they will warn of predators and will chase off aerial predators, especially owls and hawks. The bald eagles, while I have a lot around here, don’t prey on my bunnies because they have easier pickings at the beach with all the fish carcasses and at the dump with all the garbage.

But crows are loyal and intelligent. I really want some to come live up by me… alas, it’s a smaller flock and they get plenty of muffins and chicken strips from other people, they have no reason to leave the general area. 😞

  2. I always feel that crows don’t get the respect they deserve so I’m glad you got a really good picture of one and that you also appreciate them.

    • I agree. They’re way cool. By the way… I never comment on your blog because it won’t let me. I may have told you that years ago. Every time I try, it puts up an error message, says I’m not allowed to leave a comment… but your blog is one of my favorites! I always enjoy your personal stories and perspectives. Thanks for that!

    • They will chase off the predators like hawks and owls. I have wild rabbits and arctic hares that I love to watch, so having the crows would benefit us. Plus they’re just fun to watch.

I will say, in my experience, wild(er) crows like these are way cooler than city crows. City crows can really become a nuisance, but these ones aren’t so inbred and really intelligent and interesting to watch their antics and internal behavior.
