Light and Shadow Photography

In winter, it seems to me, the play of light and shadow appears most intense. Especially when observing the snow and sun, freezing and thawing, ocean and air. I hope you enjoy a few examples.

The afternoon fog on a calm day creates a mood.
Driftwood in black and white.
A sharp wind and a grey sky produce black waves.
A mountain of plowed up snow.
Although this shot is out of focus, I rather liked the mood it engulfed.
In a few months this willow should see green buds again.
It wasn’t until I was reviewing my photos that I saw I caught a drop of melted snow in the act.
The sand of mixed with the snow which has been plowed off the road melts at an accelerated rate.
More driftwood in black and white.
The sun beams oozed through.
These last two images I share together only to show how different one scene can look merely by viewing it landscape versus portrait. Two totally different feelings.

Abandoned in Decay Photography

Texture.
Growing together.
Alder-cones.
What stories could be told? Lost in a field now overrun by alders and grass.
How did this come to be?
What a story this abandoned building must hold. I found this hidden amongst the alders.
Rusted through.
Seeds.
The more you look, the more you see.
Strawberry leaf.
Beauty at the end of life.
A new world.
Decay with life.
Mood.
Reach.

Winter Glow and Soft New Life Photography

The winter glow is like magic to my soul. I find myself unable to look away. The chill buries itself in my bones, but it’s not unwelcome. Gone are the long overheated days of summer with its unrelenting sun rays and sweat on my brow. These are the days of hibernation, of introspection, of root growth.

Winter (and autumn) are my favorite seasons, which is one of the many reasons I live here in Alaska. Where I live, it’s about six months long and I love it.

I also got a precious little bundle of gifts when my one of my rabbits had a litter of kits the last day of the year. I’m in love with these little guys. I hope you guys enjoy the photos.

No filters. Just gorgeous sunset reflection and dark clouds overhead.
Sunset ice glow.
You know it’s cold when there’s sea ice.
I like how the dark clouds overhead made the water look almost black.

Brand new baby bunnies. Four kits.
Born 31st December.
Six days old.
10 days old. Look at those ears!

As We Close This Year 2021

Dear friends,

Here we are again, at the end of another year. For some it was difficult, taxing, and stressful and for some it was new beginnings and personal growth. For me, though I had some personal challenges and a brush with death, I considered 2021 incredibly satisfying and full of growth and change.

I signed eleven individual authors of both poetry and fiction as well as releasing the gorgeous art and poetry anthology Creation and the Cosmos and the unique horror short story anthology The Hawthorne Project, both of which I’m incredibly proud of.

Starting off the spring with Hidden Bear’s second edition of Moleskine on a Coffee Table, followed in summer with emje mccarty’s delightful short story collection Tangled Together, Brandon White’s second book Real Big American Zen, and John A Graser’s debut Memoirs of an Addicted Mind. Autumn rolled in with poetry veteran Dan Provost’s gritty A Fistful of Ponies, Jhanjhri Shah’s moving Eyes See Soul, and the unapologetic poetry of V.R. McKoy in The War for Solace. Ryan Deckard re-released his debut novella, The Witch and the Wish and now here in December J Matthew Waters gave us Derecho while Braeden Michaels delivered Growl from the Sun.

It’s been such an honor to work with each and every writer, both within the anthologies and the single author books. I believe in every single one of these men and women and I hope you’ll give some of them a look and follow.

On another platform I shared some of the books I read this past year by indie authors and here they are for you too! Most of which I’ve written reviews for. At the end of this post I’ll add the list, in case any are of interest to you. I hope you’ll check some of these authors out because most of them are really, really amazing.

Moving into this upcoming year, I have several more books currently in the works to be released from Raw Earth Ink. This includes the next book from emje mccarty, a poetry book from G.M. Manzi, a collection of short stories from Ray Van Horn, Jr., and more.

Love and light to you all,

~tara caribou

“Growl from the Sun” political poetry by Braeden Michaels

Raw Earth Ink is proud to present Braeden Michaels’ new poetry chapbook, Growl from the Sun.

Description: Author and poet Braeden Michaels delves into the many-layered political realms in his newest collection, Growl from the Sun. Beginning with his fourteen-page magnum opus of the same name, he confronts and denounces modern society and the politics of the day. No stone is left unturned. There are no sides, no labels, only raw emotion and unbending truth. This gritty selection of poetry is sure to provoke introspection and deep conversations for any who dare open its pages.

I have been a fan of Braeden’s since I first found him almost five years ago. I consider this some of his very best work to date and it’s been such an honor to be able to work with him. If you’re looking for political poetry that doesn’t care about titles, affiliations, parties, or nations… look no further. And it’s not just politics, if you dig deeper into the message underneath, you’ll recognize all facets of humanity within this collection. Fans of Allen Ginsberg, the beat generation, and Tom Waits will (I think) especially appreciate this one.

In paperback at lulu, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon.

As an eBook at: Kindle.

Below Freezing Beach Ice Photography

I know, I know: I just posted a photography piece BUT it was such a calm beautiful day and the lighting was perfect. I didn’t even take the time to adjust or edit any of these. It was 9*F/-13C and felt really invigorating. I hope you enjoy these.

And if you have 35 seconds, turn on your sound and enjoy:

My camera battery died so I didn’t get a lot of photos, but I walked back off the beach feeling at peace and filled with joy and wonder.

Early December Photography

Winter is basically my favorite time of year. The cold, the quiet, the snow. The feeling that everything is fresh and new. Though… well, it’s been a bit colder than I’d prefer, as I write this at 4:30am, it’s -10*F/-23C outside. There’s a thick layer of ice coated on the inside of every window in my house. Strangely, I’ll take this over hot, sunny days always.

I hope you enjoy a couple photos from the last couple weeks.

The volcano as seen from my driveway. That’s 50 miles away.
The light was phenomenal.
Snow bunnies love me…
…and I love them.
Before the snow got several feet deep.
My backyard.
Beautiful sunset, another afternoon with great lighting. Yes, afternoon. This was 4pm.
The lighting on the sea ice…
Last bit of sunset on the clouds.
